Using Training Balls to Train Your German Shepherd
German Shepherds are an intelligent and active breed that require regular exercise and training to stay healthy and well-behaved. One way to enhance your dog's training routine is by using training balls. Training balls can help improve your dog's agility, speed, coordination, and obedience. Here are some tips on how to use training balls to train your German Shepherd.
1. Selecting Your Training Ball
When selecting a training ball for your German Shepherd, it's important to choose one that is durable, easy to grip, and the right size for your dog. Tuscany cannot resist a game of ball, so we make sure hers are durable and can withstand rough play. We love the training balls from Foam Dog Balls, you can even customize them to match your other dog training gear!
2. Basic Ball Training
Before you start advanced training, start with basic obedience commands like sit, stay, and come using the training ball as motivation for your dog. These commands establish leadership and build your dog's confidence. Once your dog has mastered basic commands, you can move on to more challenging training. Most german shepherds are high drive ball loving dogs which makes training balls the perfect tool to hold your dog’s attention during training sessions.
3. Training Balls Improve Agility
Training balls also help improve your dog's agility. Start by tossing the ball a short distance and encouraging your dog to retrieve it. Gradually increase the distance and vary the direction of the throws to challenge your dog's agility. If you are also trying to teach your dog to catch, the training ball works wonders for this, too! This exercise can help your dog develop better reflexes, balance, and body control.
4. Dropping the Ball
One of the most important skills for a dog to learn is dropping the ball on command. Teaching your dog to drop the ball helps prevent your dog from swallowing the ball, which can lead to choking. This training technique can also be applicable with other toys that your dog plays with or if they get a hold of something they shouldn’t have. Use positive reinforcement (like the word “yes”) and treat rewards to encourage your dog to drop the ball on command. As mentioned previously, Tuscany loves her ball, and we’re currently working on this command.
5. Playing Fetch
Fetch is a fun and great way to bond with your German Shepherd while also giving them exercise. Toss the ball and encourage your dog to retrieve it and bring it back to you. Use positive reinforcement to reward your dog when they bring the ball back to you. Playing fetch helps improve your dog's endurance, speed, and obedience.
